Sarovar Hotels has etched out aggressive expansion plans in the southern states and aims to establish 20 new properties by the year 2010. The group is also foraying into the serviced apartment sector with the launch of Park Inn Suites in Bangalore.

Informs Ajay Bakaya, its executive director, "As part of this plan, we will launch four new hotels by the end of 2007. Hence, we will be operating 34 hotels with 3,250 rooms by this year-end. Currently, our main aim is to strengthen our presence in cities and towns across India with our diverse brands."

Bangalore -based J P Distilleries has opened a 130-room four-star hotel in Bangalore . ‘JP Churchill Hotel and Suites’. It is a joint venture with the London-based leisure and hospitality firm Eclipse Hotels.

Average room rent is around Rs 4,000 per night, according to a release.

Speaking at the launch, J P Distilleries Director J P Sudhakar told reporters here that the hotel was built at a cost of around Rs 45 crore.

Goa-based La Calypso Hotels Private Ltd is planning to extend its footprint across India with a whopping investment of Rs 350 crore to set-up seven five-star properties by 2009.

"We are in talks with developers to provide us with the space in commercial complexes where we can have at least 100 hotel rooms,” said Prabhat Pani, CEO, Ginger Hotels.

It is also developing its first property at a mall in Ludhiana, Punjab, where it has rented the fourth and fifth floors. It will be operational by January 2008.

As many as 133 hotel projects are in the pipeline in South India, of which 30 are planned in Karnataka in the 3-star and 5- star categories, 61 in Kerala, 20 in Andhra Pradesh in the 3-star category, 18 in Tamil Nadu primarily in the 2-star and 3-star categories and four in Pondicherry in the heritage category.

Realty companies Assotech Ltd and Supertech Ltd have said that they would develop a Rs 150-crore five-star hotel at Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, and that the Radisson Hotel Metropolis under the US-based Carlson Group of hotels, would manage it.

UK-based Dawnay Day Hotels India (DDHI) on Wednesday said it would invest 1.2 billion dollars for setting up a chain of four-star hotels in the country.

DDHI has already acquired four properties at Ahmedabad, Pune, Lucknow and Jaipur in this regard. The company has committed an investment of 1.2 billion dollars to set up mid-priced range of hotels in the country. In the first phase of the project, it will make an initial investment of 200 million dollars.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts has signed an agreement with Pallazzio Hotel and Leisure limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of Phoenix Mills limited) to manage the Shangri-La Hotel, Mumbai, opening the end of 2009. The hotel will be Shangri-La's fifth property in India following Shangri-La Hotel, new Delhi, which opened in September 2005, and the Shangri-La Hotel, Bangalore, Palm Retreat Shangri-La, Bangalore, and Traders Hotel, Bangalore, all opening in 2009.

Kamat Hotels (India) is entering into the heritage segment with its upcoming Orchid Heritage hotel. The group is developing the Jadhav Gadhi Fort in Pune into a hotel. The 42-room palace hotel is likely to be operational by November this year.



The company will also expand its Lotus Suites brand. Param Kannampilly, the group's technical director, said, "We are building four-star Lotus Suites properties in Aurangabad, Baddi, Raipur and Nagpur."

The Aurangabad property, earlier called Vidanta Hotel, is being refurbished by the Kamat group and developed into an ecotel. The company plans to open the 100-room hotel by the end of this financial year (31 March). The business hotel in Baddi and the property in Raipur will also have 100 rooms each. The Nagpur property will be part of a mixed-use development including a catering college. "There will be a premier catering institute attached to the Nagpur property," informs Kannampilly. The group also plans to develop Lotus Suits in Amboli and Aronde.

Meanwhile, Kamat Hotels is also planning to build five-star Orchid properties in Nagpur and Raipur and will be expanding its Orchid property in Mumbai. "We will be adding 130 rooms to the Orchid in Mumbai," added Kannampilly.

The group is also in the process of building a 450-room property in Balewadi (Pune). "We are a joint venture partner in the project and want to open the hotel before the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Pune," announced Kannampilly.

Bangalore-based commercial property developer, DivyaSree Developers, has plans to set up two five-star hotels with 350 rooms in Bangalore and one with 250 rooms in Hyderabad in the business hotels category.



Santhosh Martin, its CEO, says, "We plan to set up an inventory of 1,000 rooms in Hyderabad and Bangalore. All hotels will come under the five-star category." According to him, DivyaSree had raised US$ 100 million from global investment firm TPG Axon Capital early in 2007 and 20 per cent of the funds from this investment will be used towards development of the slated projects.

"The construction for the business hotel in Bangalore is expected to start by next July and the Hyderabad hotel construction would begin in March next year. All these hotels will become operational in the next three years," revealed Martin. DivyaSree Developers has plans of further expansion, however Martin was not ready to divulge any further information.

Initiating talks with Nirula's for Potpourri brand in no-frills Red Fox

Upscale hotel chain Lemon Tree is set to launch six properties across metro cities in India. It is also initiating talks with Nirula's for its F&B outlet - Potpourri - for its no-frills brand Red Fox.

The company plans to launch its Lemon Tree brand in Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, South Delhi and Hyderabad by 2008 and one property in East Delhi by the end of this year. Patu Keswani, chairman and managing director of Lemon Tree Hotels, said, "The properties in Hyderabad, Jaipur and East Delhi will be mixed-use developments. The East Delhi property is located above the East Delhi Mall (EDM)."



It plans to take the figure to 14 across 12 cities by 2010. "We are building Lemon Tree Hotels in Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and Pune," he said. Keswani added that the group will also initiate talks with Nirula's to open its F&B brand in its Delhi Red Fox property, and will consider it for the other properties as well.

Red Fox is expected to open in Delhi, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Chandigarh within two years, according to Keswani. The group is also planning to open eight more Red Fox properties in Navi Mumbai, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Ranchi, Raipur, Nagpur, Bangalore and Mysore by 2011. Currently, Lemon Tree Hotels has four operating hotels - two in Gurgaon and one each in Pune and Goa.

Sarovar Hotels, has chalked out an ambitious Rs 500 crore plan to expand its operations in the country by building about two dozen hotels and eyeing the lucrative market in the Gulf.

The group has tied up with investors to build as many as 23 hotels and upgrade some of them. It is also building three hotels -- two in Chennai and one in Chandigarh -- out of its own funds, Sarovar Hotels Executive Director (ED) Ajay K Bakaya told PTI here.

Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE:MAR) announced that its India hotels brand portfolio will more than triple by year-end 2010 as the company's presence in the country grows to encompass 21 properties, six lodging brands ranging from luxury to upper-moderate categories, and 3,324 rooms.

Included in Marriott's India hotels expansion are:

• three JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts properties and one Ritz-Carlton hotel in the luxury tier
• one Marriott Hotels & Resorts hotel and one Renaissance Hotels & Resorts property in the upscale, deluxe category
• one Marriott Executive Apartments property for extended-stay travelers
• eight Courtyard by Marriott hotels in the upper-moderate segment.
