NEWS| TECH| Now Find, Book, Seek, Search, Map Intercon Hotels

Using Google Earthtechnology, Intercontinental Hotels Group’s guests can plan and book their travel anywhere in the world in just a few simple clicks. visit earth.ihg.com

Google Earth was a tool begging to be exploited. Thankfully someone has.

I never understood, why none of the leading chains put up their maps/directions using Google Earth. Even today most have written directions or worse no directions as at all.

The Taj Hotels website tajhotels.com has a map that is not to scale & really I've been to Delhi, that map is dificult.

The Oberoi Hotels website oberoihotels.com doesnt have maps. Check out Cecil shimla instructions at http://www.thececil.com/en-US/Hotel/TG_LocationAccess.aspx

Is your hotel using it? Let me know.

HERE IS A SPECIAL TREAT FOR OUR READERS

We have a quick interview with someone who worked with Oberois.
I asked him what the interview is all about & what could you do to succeed!

Read on....

Prabhjot, catches up with Divyansh Kaushik, on what it takes to get thru the Oberoi Interviews.

pb: Thank you for doing this Div. I cannot tell you the number of requests I get from people wanting to work with The Oberois. They have all heard of these 'campus legends' if I may, about how its so difficult to make it and that there are seven or more rounds. is it true?

Div: Yes, it is little tough to get thru an Oberoi interview. Number of rounds solely depends on the no. of applications received. But if one has the passion for the company and has teh right attitude, he or she can easily see thru these interviews.

pb: What would be the three things people can start doing today, if they wanted to make the cut?

Div: First one should know about the Oberoi Hotels and Resorts well. He or she should know the company's profile, its various businesses and the latest happenings in the company.
Second is going to be the technical plethora. You need to have an aptitude for the department you want to work in. The technical know -how of the area of interest is must.
Third is the general awareness and the latest happenings one needs to be intact with.
Apart from the above three, one must have a pleasing personality. excellent communication skills and good grooming standards.

pb: take me through all the rounds? what happens in each of them?

Div: Generally the first round is a Group Discussion wherein the topics generally revolve around the current happenings of world.

Second round is the personal presentation conducted by the H.R. Manager. A good personal introduction complemented with a nice professional attire is the key here.

Third round is all about the technical aspects about the concerned department as well as the other operational departments of the hotel. The panel here includes the H.O.D.

Fourth round is with the General Manager of an Oberoi Hotel. It consists of a wide range of questions from political, sports, technical and other arenas.

The above four rounds get you through OCER i.e. Oberoi Central Employment Register or precisely you become an Operations Assistant.

The next four rounds are more stern and they form part of the OCLD selection process and place you as a management trainee with Oberoi Hotels & Resorts.

Oberoi’s Wildflower Hall bends rules to accommodate Priyanka Vadra and family

Rules are for anybody but the first family of India with the Oberoi Group. At Wildflower Hall, the luxurious five star hotel which boasts of being only of the two hotels in India where no child below 12 is given reservation policy, the rule was broken to accommodate Robert Vadra, Priyanka Vadra and their two children.

The Vadra’s who recently bought a piece of land at near Charabara are intending to build a hill cottage, the plans for which are being drawn up. Priyanka along with her husband and children arrived yesterday and are said to have discussed the building plans.

Robert left for Chandigarh early in the day to catch up with the cricket match at Mohali while Priyanka left in the afternoon as the family were to catch the evening Shatabdi train back to Delhi.

However what is being questioned is the ‘Child Policy’ which the hotel displays on its website as ‘Wildflower Hall is not suitable for children below 12 years of age. The hotel is located in mountainous terrain which could be unsafe for young children. We, therefore, do not accept reservations for families travelling with children below 12 years.’

The hotel has been pursuing this policy for over a year and anybody with a child seeking a booking at Wildflower Hall, even at a late hour is sent to Hotel Cecil, another Oberoi property in mid town.

When contact, Vikas Sharma, hotel manager Wildflower Hall first denied that the children were allowed to stay at the hotel and only Robert and Priyanka Vadra were permitted but later retracted and said that there was a security cover in the hotel and he is not aware of what the arrangement were.

Tea & Luxury with PRS 'Biki' Oberoi

The pair of black handcrafted John Lobb opera shoes with red insoles and black grosgrain bow brought to us by a liveried young retainer says it all. Prithvi Raj Singh ‘Biki’ Oberoi is all about classic, timeless style.

“There aren’t too many people who wear a dinner jacket anymore,” sighs the 78-year-old hotelier whose surname bears a weighty legacy that belies his diminutive frame.

“But I used to throw formal, black-tie parties in Delhi right up to the late 1970s... Now these shoes are a bit tight for me.”

His eyes twinkle as he enunciates the last bit in his impeccable accent and lights up his Cohiba for the nth time on a muggy Sunday afternoon. Obviously there’s no question that the shoe fits when it comes to hoteliering, as we sit chatting at the 55-acre green haven on Delhi’s outskirts that the chairman & CEO of EIH Ltd calls home. “This is the only home I’ve ever had,“ he says of this modest Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired building. Till he bought and renovated Naila fort in Rajasthan and recently finished a 40-acre retreat in Bangalore, that is.

“This place hasn’t changed since it was built in the 1970s,” say the man who heads the Rs 1,115 crore Oberoi empire comprising 32 hotels and luxury cruisers in five countries, flight catering, tour services, air charters and more.

As he nurses a china mug of his favourite Earl Grey tea with a chocolate labrador and black spaniel snoozing at his feet, a surreptitious 360 degree glance around the room confirms what Lobb and Cohiba assert: classic style. A Castiglione Arco (the iconic lamp of the late 1960s) swoops out from a corner as a distinctly Satish Gujral fireplace soars between the living and dining areas; greenery soothes the eye from large French windows and the raucous call of peacocks pierce the heavy air outside.

Like the Barcelona chairs in his office, the Husain and Kishen Khanna paintings and silver framed photos of his children, there’s nary a nouveau piece to jar the eye: everything has an air of, well, aptness. Not surprisingly, this underlines Oberoi’s own idea of luxury: everything in its place.
