NEWS| Tourism growth in Asia remains robust

The latest Asia Digest 2008 has been unveiled at a press conference in Singapore today.

Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels, the region’s market leader in hotel investment and advisory services, identified Malaysia and Vietnam as the key growth markets in Southeast Asia, with Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia continuing to be strong markets for predominantly intra-regional travel.

NEWS| E-Tickets Only Starting June 1

Mark your calendars: In 100 days, airlines around the world plan to stop issuing paper tickets.

The International Air Transport Association, a trade group representing 240 airlines, announced yesterday that starting June 1, its members will use only electronic tickets. The airlines, which include the big U.S. carriers, account for 94 percent of international air traffic.

NEWS| Tourism sector to generate over two lakh jobs by 2010

According to Union Tourism and Culture Minister, Ambika Soni, the tourism sector is likely to generate over two lakh jobs by 2010. Addressing a group of budding air hostesses recently, Soni said, "The country will witness tremendous employment generation in the skilled and semi-skilled sector, viz. pilots, aviation engineers, air hostesses, stewards, ground handling staff, guides, travel agents, tour operators and freight agencies."

NEWS| IATA bids goodbye to paper airline tickets

Paper tickets are well on their way to becoming relics of a bygone era.

The air travel industry, in its efforts to anticipate profit downturn, is striving to be more efficient by eliminating unnecessary material and prolonged service at airports.

The International Air Transport Industry (IATA), a leading aviation trade group, says the industry needs to simplify its business as soaring fuel prices and the global economic slowdown will result in lower profits in 2008, despite a steady growth in passenger numbers.

Medical tourism set to become a $2 bn industry

Growing at the rate of 25 per cent a year, medical tourism is on track to become a two billion dollars industry in another five years.

An estimated 1,50,000 patients arrived in 2004 from across the globe from USA, UK, Middle East, Africa and SAARC countries for medical treatment in India, according to official figures.

In the same year, medical tourism was a 333 million dollar strong market and the ministry said given its growth rate of 25 per cent it will emerge as a two billion dollars market in 2012.
