It could be one of the biggest moves as far as hospitality sector is concerned. The Leela Palaces & Resorts president Peter Leitgeb has joined as president & CEO of The Claridges Hotels & Resorts (CHR). Leitgeb, a 30-year veteran in the hospitality industry, comes with a diverse experience of holding senior management positions with some of the leading global hospitality brands. He is one of the few industry professionals with senior management experience in India and overseas.
Confirming the move Leitgeb told Sunday ET: “I have run great hotels and hotel companies from Dallas to Hong Kong to Berlin, but nothing has excited me more than the opportunity to build a great luxury hotel group in India.” When asked why he continued in India for one more stint, Peter simply said “I love India. Also, the opportunity to build a premium hotel group was too good to pass up.”
As CHR president & CEO, Leitgeb will oversee the expansion plans of the group, besides re-positioning The Claridges, Delhi. In the coming months, The Claridges, which has been a landmark in Lutyens Delhi, will be repositioned as a boutique hotel. The hotel will benchmark itself with leading hotels to build service and operational excellence to cater to guests who expect the very best.
Early Autumn 2008 will see the group unveil The Claridges, Surajkund, a 240-room five-star hotel in NCR. With its aesthetically done up interiors and state-of-the-art conference and business facilities The Claridges, Surajkund will cater to corporates, MICE segment as well as leisure travellers.
This will be followed by a renovated Mumbai Sea Rock property in 2009. For this hotel, CHR has signed with the world's leading hotel brand, the $1.8-billion Mandarin Oriental Hotel group, part of Jardine Matheson Holdings. The group is focused on expansion and is also exploring opportunities to operate and manage hotels in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Goa, Jaipur and Kolkata over the next few years.

Soon the world's leading hotel brand, the $1.8-billion Mandarin Oriental Hotel group, part of Jardine Matheson Holdings, will check into India. The group, which has been planning to enter the Indian hospitality sector and was in talks with many domestic players, has recently signed an MoU with Delhi-based hospitality chain Claridges Hotel & Resorts (CHR), which owns five properties around the country.
The MoU has been signed for a management contract of 20 years initially for the Mumbai property which may be extended to other group hotels. Last year, Mandarian Oriental had got approval from FIPB for this purpose and it plans to set up a wholly owned subsidiary for this JV in the next few months. The group had made an unsuccessful attempt to set up shop in the country seven years ago.
When contacted a Claridges spokesperson said: "We have been talking to Mandarin Oriental group but nothing has been finalised as yet."
However, sources said the group has indeed reached the closing stages of its negotiations with Mandarin Oriental, and initially the Mumbai property will bear its brand name. CHR had taken over the disputed SeaRock hotel in Mumbai a couple of years back and now the property is in a re-development mode.
Besides Mumbai both the groups are keen to extend their JV to other properties and specially to the Delhi one. According to sources Mandarin Oriental wants CHR to increase its present room inventory of the Delhi property as Mandarin would need a bigger property than the present Claridges New Delhi property which has only 130 rooms. in fact, application to increase the room inventory has been lying with the local authorities for last three years but nothing has been finalised as yet.
The group's previous attempt to set up operations here did not materialise due to differences with its local partner, Indian Hotels & Health Resorts. As part of its acquisition of the Rafael group in 2000, Mandarin Oriental inherited a joint venture with Indian Hotels & Health Resorts. Mandarin and Indian Hotels had formed a 70:30 venture called Mandarin Hotels India but the relationship did not flourish and they terminated the agreement in 2001.
Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group which operators some of the world's most prestigious hotels and resorts, currently operating 20 luxury hotels with a further 16 under development In total, Mandarin Oriental now operates, or has under development, 9,500 rooms in 20 countries with 15 hotels in Asia, 12 in The Americas and seven in Europe and North Africa.
