Heritage hotels see boom with growing domestic travellers

Follow Prabhjot Bedi on Twitter Once considered as big draws among foreigners, heritage hotels are now equally getting popular with domestic travellers. It is estimated that domestic tourists travelling to the heritage properties would witness a huge jump this year. Last year, 20 to 25% domestic travellers stayed at these heritage properties. This year, it is expected to cross 35 to 40% as first six months has seen a jump of more than 20%.

Says Sunil Sikka head marketing & business development, WelcomHeritage Hotels: “There has been a spurt in domestic tourists to heritage hotels. We might say that domestic travellers have just realised the potential of heritage properties as interesting destinations for short holidays. They have also discovered and begun to appreciate that heritage hotels offer a link to the incredible history of our country. There is another reason that we must realise that heritage hotels are reasonably priced.”

The pioneer in the heritage category has been states like Rajasthan, where almost every fort, palace and haveli has been converted into a hotel or a museum. Kerala has followed with its own special style with homes, bungalows and waterways. It is estimated that there are more than 93 big and small heritage hotels around the country and 15 to 20 are in offering. Though these property owners don’t follow any different model for international or domestic traffic. Says Francis Wacziarg of Neemrana Hotels:

”There is little difference in the requirements of domestic and international travellers these days. One has to remember that Indians are also travelling all over the world and expect all hotels to maintain certain standards.

Close attention should be paid to hygiene, security and fire safety. The property should have international and regional cuisines and décor in keeping with the ambiance and history of the property.” Though hospitality sector in the country is booming but these grand palaces today command two to three times the rates and average the highest Average Roo Rates (ARR) in the industry.
