Goa to allow five off-shore casinos

Follow Prabhjot Bedi on Twitter The Goa government will allow five off-shore casinos, including the existing one, to operate in the state, Chief Minister Digamber Kamat said.

“Ten companies had applied for the permission amongst which six are permitted to bring ships… First five, which are able to bring the ships, will be allowed to set up off-shore casinos,” Kamat told reporters.

Goa, the only state permitting off-shore casinos, has one operating in the waters of Mandovi river in Panaji.

The second casino licenced to Leela Hotel Group is wading through neck deep controversy with locals opposing it.

The local population has objected to the 13-metre-long casino vessel which was planned to be stationed in river Sal in Cavelossim village of south Goa. The matter is pending with the state government.

Chief Secretary J P Singh has heard both the parties — company and agitators — and will give his decision by next week.

“Whoever brings the vessel and gets the permission for berthing it will be allowed to start operations,” Kamat said citing the earlier state cabinet decision.

“We are charging Rs 10 lakh as processing fee and Rs five crore annually to operate off-shore casinos in the state,” Home Minister Ravi Naik told reporters.
