3000 hotel rooms in airport complex

Follow Prabhjot Bedi on Twitter The Delhi International Airport (P) Limited (DIAL) has decided to develop hotels with as many as 3,000 rooms in the first phase of the development of the airport complex. The decision will help the Government solve to a great extent the impending problem of accommodation shortage during the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

In the agreement signed with the DIAL for development of the airport complex, the government had conceded five per cent of the total complex area as a commercial component. The DIAL could use these 250 acres for cost recovery, by developing retail outlets, malls, restaurants etc. Senior officials said the DIAL has instead decided to build hotels on the land.

“We have already identified 45 acres which will be used for the hotels. Advertisements have been issued for expressions of interests from both national as well as international developers and we have received response from 50-odd companies. We will now be issuing requests for proposals by the end of this month,” said DIAL officials.

The officials also pointed out that the decision was taken keeping in mind the impending room shortage problem coupled with the expected increase in the inflow of tourists over the next few years.

“We expect the number of people arriving in Delhi to increase to 30 million passengers annually by 2010. It makes sense for us to develop hotel infrastructure. Occupancy will not be a problem since unlike other places across the world, where airport hotels are located 30 to 40 km away from the city, ours fall right in the middle of the national capital region, with Gurgaon right next door,” said the officials.

The DIAL plans to build both budget and star hotels. “The links to the airport facilitates our hotel project. We will have connectivity through the expressway and also the special Metro line from the airport to Connaught Place. The 20-km route can be covered in 16 minutes on this special super-fast stretch. We have planned convention centers in the complex as well, thus facilitating the stay for business delegations,” the officials added.
